What Does Death Mean to You? – Death and Fearfulness

Death & Dying: Karma - What happens? Where do we go?

Most children of aging parents will find themselves making healthcare decisions for their parents. Even when their parent has completed a living will and an advanced medical directive, there will still be decisions to be made. This is because the advanced medical directive cannot possibly anticipate every medical condition that may occur and because most elderly patients at some point will be too weak to make their own decisions.

Fear of Nonexistence
The thing that everybody knows but nobody really talks about. But though how much we evade this unavoidable conclusion, time forces us to think about what death really means to us. Since we all know that we will have to face it, when time comes.

Reading about this may even start to frighten you off, but all of us must be able to understand that in order to live our life to the fullest, we must discern how little time is given to us.

Our denial is an important mechanism that we use to protect ourselves from feeling overwhelmed by our emotions. For a time, it can help us to get through the demands of the day. If used for too long a time, however,it can rob us of living what time remains with our loved one. We may miss the opportunity to make plans that assure their comfort. Even worse than that, it can result in the loss of many important shared moments that may sustain us long after they are gone.

So how do we know when their loved one is approaching their final months of life? For many patients, it is simpler than you think. Only ten percent of Americans will die suddenly. The remaining ninety percent will have a slow decline. So what are the signs? First, most patients experience weight loss. In elderly patients 10% loss of weight is significant and may be an indicator that they are on a downhill trajectory. That is why weight loss is one of the criteria for patients to enter hospice care. This weight loss will not be reversed with supplements or medications. Weight loss occurs for a number of reasons. They may not feel hungry or may have trouble swallowing. Sometimes eating makes them feel ill and food tastes are altered by the medications that they are taking. Regardless of the reason, if they are in their final months of life, feeding them more or different foods will not make them live longer and may instead, them more uncomfortable. Most patients in their final months are also weaker. Weakness may begin with having difficulty arising from the chair as their thigh muscle is often the first to grow weak. This weakness progresses from their needing assistance with walking to being chair bound and then to being bed bound. Often families will insist that they be seen by a physical therapist to “get them walking again.” If they are truly in their final months, this will not work.

They wanted to know what to expect during the course of their illness and they wanted to plan for events that would occur after their death such as planning their funeral. The fourth wish was that they would die with a sense of completion. This wish involved faith issues, life review, resolving conflicts, spending time with family and saying goodbye. Issues of faith, although highly individual, were often described as important in their healing process at end of life. The fifth wish was that the dying person wanted to contribute to the well being of others. They wanted to continue to share their time and knowledge and to be of use to others. Finally, the patients wanted not to be viewed as a patient with a disease but rather to be affirmed as a whole person, unique in their life, values and preferences.

Being human is really a very complex affair, however, when death comes, everything seems to be simple: You want to share love, give love, live in happiness and be with God. We can be simple and complex. Though we cannot opt out of death, we can choose the life we want.

Understanding Depressions

So, what is  depression? An illness that affects the whole body and thoughts is called  depression. The way you eat, sleep and the way you ponder things will be  affected.

When someone is  depressed he or she cannot get away with it even with a strong will. However  most depressions can be treated even it has been plaguing for years.

Depression symptoms are vary from person to person, it  depends on depression type and how long it has been allowed to progress. Having  troubles with decision making and concentration is not uncommon during  depression. Many people joined depression quiz to find out their type of depressions.

Many depressed people usually have problems with short term  memory. Mostly always think negative. Some may be said to suffer from poor self  esteem and pessimism. People with a very serious depressions may even have self  destructive thoughts.

They may feel very  tired and very irritable. Many people who are depressed often feel helpless and  hopeless, and they suffer greatly from any work productivity, in other words  they often feel uncomfortable with daily activities.

When is the time for a Depression Counselor

Depression is one of the strongest human emotions. If you leave this emotion untreated, those suffering from it severly could be lead to something more serious.

Everybody feels unhappy at times. That is normal. But clinical depression goes beyond that.  It is a disease.  But it is treatable.

I would like to offer some advice and tips that I have gained from my experience as a therapist in San Diego.

So what makes depression, clinical depression?

First off, a person can feel hopelessly sad. When a person feels as if there is no point to anything.Or life isn’t worth living. Which can lead to thoughts and feelings of suicide.

This usual lasts for two weeks or more. When the depression starts to last that long, then you are moving into a state of clinical depression.

And when you get to that point, you need to see a counselor.Don’t leave this condition untreated if you find yourself at that point.Believe me, from my experience as a depression counselor I know.

So once you are at that point, you have to do certain things. Because sometimes imbalances in your body or chemistry in your brain can cause depression, you may need to treat it medically.  You would treat it with antidepressant drugs.

Of course as a counselor, I prefer to treat it through depression counseling.  A counselor can help a person get to grips with the root of their depression.

They can also try other forms of therapy like cognitive behavior therapy which addresses how you think. The goal is to turn those negative thoughts into positive ones by questioning them.

A counselor is also good in helping you use relaxation techniques.  If the depression is caused by stress, using relaxation will help combat that form of stress.

Most of all a depression counselor will be the most effective person to find out what is causing the depression.

They are good in finding out if there was something that happened recently that may cause this. They can investigate and determine if it is caused by something from the past.Or they can try to see if something is going in your body that is causing it.  Whether it is some physiological change.

Depression is a condition that is treatable.  But without knowing the cause, you can’t treat it.This is why finding a good counselor or therapist will help a lot.

The Difference Between Corporate And Family Funeral Home

mourning

Roughly 3,000 of 22,000 funeral homes are owned by large corporations. Houston-based Service Corporation International (SCI) is the biggest owner, claiming a 14% share of revenues from afar, while still allowing local management and control. Other giants include Carriage Services, and Stewarts, who own thousands of funeral homes and cemeteries. Prices at the busiest funeral homes could rise as much as 35% in some areas, following the acquisitions. While some are excited about the mergers that bring additional finances and services, others worry that the corporations won’t provide the same quality of service, as given by a family owned funeral home.

As of 2007, there aren’t a lot of visible differences between the family-owned funeral home and its corporate-run competitors. Even with part of the cost being funneled to another company in another state, many are still a locally owned and managed funeral parlor. The prices may be slightly higher or customers may be subtly urged to purchase funeral packages, rather than simply a cremation or a casket. Since 1984, there have been heavy regulations mandated by the government in a document otherwise known as “The Funeral Rule.” Therefore, there are certain protections for bereft families and they cannot be overtly pushed into buying anything unnecessary or beyond their budgets.

Secondly, branding has become part of the corporate appeal. Twenty-four-hour “compassion hotline” services are marketed on television, some targeting Latino viewers or other specific demographics. They choose new names like “Dignity Memorial” or “Forever Remembered” to be marketed from coast to coast. Websites will become more elaborate and marketing techniques could begin to edge out the smaller competition. However, many argue that the appeal of the family-owned funeral parlor will never die because people generally associate higher levels of care and fairer prices from the independents.

Thirdly, big companies with big money can sometimes offer better musical arrangements, more funeral flowers and more elaborate memorials. Some directors can even offer videographers who will put together a multimedia presentation for guests at the wake or memorial. Another newer service being offered by funeral homes/laboratory partnerships is DNA storage, which can help with paternal tests, family genealogical history studying and disease screening. The price for this service is about $295 for DNA retrieval and 25 years of storage. These services are valuable to some, but could one day usurp all the little funeral homes that can’t accommodate these extra, high tech goodies.

Typically, the mourning families don’t care whether a funeral home is owned by a corporation or a family, when it comes down to the day of loss. Therefore, it’s a good idea to check out local funeral homes and cemeteries and discuss things like cremation or funeral expenses beforehand, and get these things in writing! While it seems sort of morbid to think about it, thinking ahead can lessen the financial burden later on.
